About me
👋 Hi, I’m Derrik
I’m a father of three with a love for nature, music, birds, plants, and a good board game. I enjoy making and collecting things, whether that’s in the garden, out in the field with my binoculars, or here online. This site is my digital garden: a quiet place to share what I’m curious about, what I’m learning, and the things that bring me joy.

My carreer
Ever since the dark days of the browser wars, I’ve been building websites. In 2012, after successfully completing the Applied Art & Technology program at Saxion, I decided to turn it into my profession. You can find my career history below.

My current role
Since 2017, I’ve been working as a front-end developer at Netgemak. Here, I design and develop websites and apps for everyone from small local businesses to large, internationally operating companies.
In my day-to-day work, I focus on the following:
- Tinkering with our WordPress theme, which makes use of Timber and Gutenberg
- Developing and maintaining React Native apps and deploying them using EAS
- Researching new technologies and implementing them within our workflow
- Optimizing existing websites to improve their discoverability
- Turning designs into clean, valid websites
- Optimizing existing websites to ensure they are WCAG compliant
- Designing websites and apps using tools such as Figma and Sketch
- Implementing performance and speed optimizations for websites

Hobbies
Because my workday mostly revolves around computers, I try to stay away from them as much as possible in my free time. It doesn’t always work, but when it does, I’m usually busy with one of the following things.
